Engineers at MIT have developed sensor operated robotic fingers that enhance the grasping motion of the human hand. The device, which is wrapped around the wrist, works like two extra fingers - one next to the small finger and one next to the thumb. The robotic fingers can exert forces as strong as a human hand during a grasping motion.
Harry Asada, the Ford Professor of Engineering in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering said, “this is a completely intuitive and natural way to move your robotic fingers...you do not need to command the robot, but simply move your fingers naturally. Then the robotic fingers react and assist your fingers.”
