Tom Hanks can do no wrong in my eyes. The actor launched a new typewriter app last week that has rocketed to the top spot in the iTunes charts in both the overall and productivity categories.

The app itself is pretty cool, actually. It really simulates the experience of using a typewriter, right down to the clackclack noise. The app is free, but you can purchase the use of other 'typewriters', the Hanx 707 and the Hanx Golden Touch. The default selection is the Hanx Prime Select. One you are finished your special text, you can email or message it to friends.

It might seem like a bit of a strange move for Hanks to launch an app, but it seems very much like a passion project. Last year in the New York Times, Hanks was extolling the virtues of the typewriting experience in an article entitled "I am TOM. I like to TYPE. Hear That?

"I use a manual typewriter — and the United States Postal Service — almost every day. My snail-mail letters and thank-you notes, office memos and to-do lists, and rough — and I mean very rough — drafts of story pages are messy things, but the creating of them satisfies me like few other daily tasks."

"In addition to sound, there is the sheer physical pleasure of typing; it feels just as good as it sounds, the muscles in your hands control the volume and cadence of the aural assault so that the room echoes with the staccato beat of your synapses."

"You can choose the typewriter to match your sound signature." Sounds good to me, Tom.
