Android is very good for a lot of different reasons. It is more of an open platform than its competitors, it is much more customizable than either iOS or Windows Phone, and it even has its own smartwatch-optimised version, Android Wear. This being said however, Android has consistently had one major issue: power consumption.
Users have long reported that due to the poorly optimized nature of Android (not to mention manufacturer ‘skins’ and ‘forks’) power use is much greater than on other operating systems. This means that batteries will run out at a faster rate, and that Android devices require larger batteries, increasing both their weight and size. While it was widely acknowledged, and indeed there was large amounts of anecdotal evidence , there was no concrete proof that this was going on. That is until now...
Both of these devices have exactly the same hardware, but one has 9 hours more battery.
Last week HTC released its One M8 for Windows Phones phone, a device which had been released a full 4 months earlier on the Android operating system. Now reports are coming in that the Windows Phone version of the phone has a massive 9 hours more battery life than the Android version. What makes this all the more incredible is that both of these devices have exactly the same hardware, making the operating system the only thing which could be causing this massive difference.
While this is very good PR for Windows Phone, it also shows Android’s developer, Google, the downsides of their more ‘open’ platform. Should they be unable to address this issue, more and more developers could follow Samsung’s lead and begin the development of their own low-power mobile operating systems, especially for wearables.
