Following recent gains in Northern Iraq, the United States has finally decided that the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS), also known simply as the Islamic State, is a threat to the region and the world. To fight them it is deploying some its most high-tech air power, in order to reduce the need for “boots on the ground”. Check out our list of 4 of these advanced weapons systems being deployed right now!
1. General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper
Also known as the Predator B, this high tech drone has been increasingly deployed in high risk combat zones. As well as being useful for round-the-clock surveillance of a target, the Reaper drone is also able to fulfill the role of a strike aircraft. It is armed with several Hellfire missiles which it can use to kill high-profile targets, should a strike be needed.
2. Stealth Black Hawk
These aircraft don’t ‘officially’ exist, however the world was alerted to their existence after one was destroyed following the raid which killed Osama Bin Laden. Based off the Black Hawk design, they feature stealth coatings and angular panels to reduce their radar footprint. They have been allegedly used by the US in their failed attempt to rescue US journalist James Foley from an ISIS prison in Ar-Raqqa, Syria.
3. F/A-18E Super Hornet
While its F-35 program is still under developmental delays, the US has been using its highly capable Super Hornet fighter-bombers to engage its enemies. Equipped with state of the art electronics as well as a huge bevy of laser guided missiles and smart bombs, the Super Hornet is able to drop a massive amount of ordnance in a single mission. Reportedly these aircraft were used to carry out the first strikes against ISIS in the Mosul Dam region.
4. A-10 “Warthog
The only aircraft built around a gun, the A-10 is the kind of plane which enemies of the US never want to see. It comes with a built in multi-barrel ‘Vulcan’ autocannon which can be used to cut through the steel armour of tanks, as well as numerous bombs and missiles. In addition, the noise it makes is equally terrifying, giving the craft the ability to work as a psychological deterrent too.
