Samsung’s ‘IFA Unpacked Episode 2 is now, over, and as the dust settles, we are left with four new amazing devices. These range from the latest in the company’s phablet line-up, to new wearables and even an innovative VR display. Check out of brief summary of the devices released below:
The new phablet by Samsung, the Galaxy Note 4 is was the star of the show at the IFA press event. The device features updated hardware, a UHD Super AMOLED screen and an improved stylus. In addition it has a metal band running around its edges, making it one of the first phones from the company feature this more popular aesthetic.
Other smartwatches released by Samsung’s early needed a phone to be able to function fully, but not the Gear S. This watch features an inbuilt 3G antenna and SIM slot, enabling it make calls and send texts like a smartphone. In addition its curved screen brings some unique form factor to Samsung’s somewhat tired designs.
The note edge was the surprise announcement of the IFA event. This phone, which will be available only in a limited release, features a curved, two-fold screen, which tapers down on the right hand side of the phone. This extra panel can be used to show scrolling messages, app icons, and other information. Samsung hopes to use the device as a developer platform to fully realise the power of this new screen design.
While we had some idea that Samsung was planning to reveal a virtual reality system, we were surprised to find out they were actually building it in collaboration with Facebook-owned Oculus VR. Rather than building a standalone system, Samsung has built a mobile VR device which uses your smartphone’s inbuilt screen and processor to become the nuts and bolts of the device. The Gear VR promises to have ultra-low latency in its refresh rate due to the Super AMOLED screen used in Samsung’s newer devices.
