Next Glass is revolutionizing the way you drink. Founded in 2012, this North Carolina based app is creating a personalized menu of beer and wine just for you. Differing itself from its’ competitors, Next Glass is choosing to the base their system on science and computers, rather than simply computers. Continually updating the database, the team uses a chemical algorithm to find the best matches for the users.
The science of alcohol, catered to you, available in an app.
Using the “wine genome cellar”, scientists are using the DNA of wines and beers in the US and recording thousands of chemical compositions, and then matching your preferences according to such, and then making a recommendation. Next Glass will give you a match score of 0-100, and the higher the number, the more drunk in love you will be. The app is after all a computer, so the longer you’re on it, the more it learns about you and it caters to your taste.
When you first download the app, you are required to swipe through a long list of beers and wines that you have already tried (or haven’t) so as to develop a taste profile. Once that is complete, it magically chooses beers and wines for you, with plenty that you have never even heard of. Eventually, they hope to have every bottle in the US in the database. And they have found a way to do it! Next Glass rented a van this summer and took it across America. Current inventory count? Stopped at 642 breweries, collected 15,350 bottles and tested 12,452 of them. They add about 200 bottles every day.
It also provides caloric content of each glass or bottle, and it will let you scan an expensive bottle, and recommend something with a similar chemical composition cheaper. It also gives hangover ratings!
This app is ideal for those wishing to enhance their social palette. Simply find a bottle of wine and scan it. Not only will it give you a match score, but it will also suggest others that are more to your preference. It also allows you to see which bottles your friends like and dislike (there is the social part!). It also provides caloric content of each glass or bottle, and it will let you scan an expensive bottle, and recommend something with a similar chemical composition cheaper. It also gives hangover ratings! That way before you embark upon your evening, you’ll know exactly how much you will regret it the next day.
For now, they’re trying to inventory all the beer and wine in the US. But next? Who knows. Perhaps they will expand to other spirits. The app is currently available for all iOS and Google devices, smartphones and tablets alike, but only for the rest of today (Thursday). It is still currently before it’s launch stage and is therefore only in beta testing for users.
