Why The Final Fantasy Remake Made A Massive Marketing Disaster

Basically, after watching this trailer, I have no interest in playing this game.

Since its debut nearly 20 years ago, Final Fantasy VII has influenced a generation. Released in 1997, the Japanese role-playing game is a well known “marker game” for the first generation of video game players, now primarily in their 30s and 40s.

Square Enix, in collaboration with Sony, announced during E3 2015, that they were making a remake. Apparently, the game will be ONLY a remake - not a prequel, sequel, or spinoff, and it will be available on the PlayStation 4 only.

According to this guy, Adam Rosser, “For lots of people Final Fantasy reminds them of that moment when games started to make sense to them”.

The voice-over was cheesy, and there was absolutely no plot explanation - and I’m sure that everyone else in my position (read: unaware of the plot summary) will feel the same way.  

Since the announcement, the official trailer has garnered more than 9 million views.

As a point of comparison, Halo 5 Warzone has managed just over 2 million views.

But to be honest, I really just don’t get it. Apparently, Final Fantasy VII has remained a solid favorite in the hearts of many, despite many a sequel and spinoff. Now I know we all look fondly back on our childhoods, but really, this trailer is a joke. Not only do you never see the protagonists face, but actually, the plot is totally unclear to those of us from a younger generation that never played the game in the first place.

Now, fair enough, some of you probably think that the remake (which will be remade by the same company that produced it 20 years ago) isn’t targeted to me or my generation, but the gamers before us.

Sure - that’s fine and well but just because this was the first game in the entire Final Fantasy series to showcase 3D computer graphics, that hardly means that the remake will be novel today.

Frankly, Square Enix made a massive marketing error with this trailer, because according to a new report by IHS Technology, worldwide, consumers will be $92 billion dollars on games this year, which is more than movies (predicted at $62 billion) and music ($18 billion) combined. Which means that even with a more committed audience, they only managed to target the older generation of gamers.
