It has a 5.5 inch screen with a 4k display, the world’s first 806 ppi screen!
Today’s IFA unveiled something very exciting: the new lineup of Xperia smartphones with the leader of the pack of 3 being the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. It comes in chrome, black, or gold, clear indicators of its flagship status.
It has a 5.5 inch screen with a 4k display, the world’s first 806 ppi screen! Compare this to the iPhone 6 Plus which has half the pixel density of the Z5 Premium despite being the same size. This 4k display gives a pixel density of 806 ppi—certainly impressive.
Underneath the very attractive design is a powerful octa-core Snapdragon 810 64-bit processor with four Cortex-A57 cores and Adreno 430 GPU. The Premium is also accompanied by 3GB RAM. Its onboard memory is at 32GB and there is also an SD card slot that can accommodate a whopping 200GB.
And of course the cameras. It has long been anticipated that the new Xperia series will have a kickass camera—and the leaks were true. The main camera of all the new Xperia phones has a large 1/2.3 Exmor RS 23-megapixel sensor with LED flash. The selfie camera has an 5-megapixel shooter. The main camera boasts the world’s fastest autofocus at 0.03 seconds and an improved 5x Clear Image Zoom.

The smaller Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact are 5.2 and 4.6 inches respectively. They pretty much have the same technology save for the 4k display, battery power, and for the Compact, just 2GB of RAM. The Premium has a 3,430mAh battery which it needs to accommodate the 4k display without overheating. The Z5 has a 2,900 mAh battery and the Compact a 2,700 mAh.
All three phones are waterproof. There is also the novel feature of a fingerprint sensor in the side power button for security. The Z5 will come in white, black, gold, and green. The Z5 Compact will be offered in white, black, yellow, and coral. Both will be offered in October.
Contrast all of this with Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus. Since we are talking cameras when we talk about the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, the recent news of Apple’s replacement program for its flagship is a big deal indeed.
For all of you iPhone 6 Plus users out there, if you end up with blurry pics, then your unit must be one of the defective ones manufactured between September 2014 and January 2015. Have it replaced at no cost in the closest Apple store.
