This week Pebble announced their newest smartwatch, the Pebble Time Round. Arguably the second most popular wearable brand on the market (second only to the mighty Apple Watch), this is not just the lightest and thinnest version of Pebble we have ever seen. At 7.5mm thin and 28 grams, this is the thinnest and lightest smartwatch in the world.
In a market where most wearables are square, this round device from Pebble is also one of the closest to appearing like an actual watch. Most wearables, including the original plastic Pebble, costing $99 and even the Apple Watch Edition that costs $17,000, are square.
Which is why this move has distinguished Pebble even more. You know the saying, “a square peg in a round hole?” Well, apparently Pebble has decided to take off the challenge of a round interface. In order to do so, Pebble managed to ensure a Timeline refresh as you scroll, rather than scrolling line by line (as was done on square models). This means that the text wraps around the round screen and maximizes the amount of information you can get on the display.
The Pebble Time Round is all metal, which makes it a lot more similar to the Pebble Time Steel, than the plastic Time.
The Pebble Time Round is all metal, which makes it a lot more similar to the Pebble Time Steel, than the plastic Time. It has a 38.5mm face, but a rather thick bezel, which makes the display size quite a bit smaller.
In the past, Pebble always boasted that their e-paper display gave outstanding battery life. But the newest from Pebble will only manage two days of battery life before requiring more juice. But that means that this battery can top up incredibly fast - after only 15 minutes of charging, you have a full day of battery.
Time Round has a microphone for voice actions (which is already available for Android, and iOS is coming soon), and the 64-color display with backlight is still there, along with splash resistance - but it isn’t water resistant like former models.
Pebble decided to gender divide for this watch: one 20mm strap designed for male audiences, and a 14mm strap designed for female audiences. The 14mm also comes in rose gold finish, in addition to the silver and black finishes that accompany the larger model.
At $249, it’s pretty reasonably priced, and you can already pre-order it from Pebble’s website. Apparently it will start shipping November 8.
