The latest leaks and announcements about flagship models blow up the Internet because people want to know what improvements are going to be made to their lives through using the newest advances created by their favorite manufacturers. This week, Google has announced a partnership with chip maker, Movidius, which has potential to lead to some amazing developments in technology, particularly with Android smartphones. 1. Operate like a human brain - What? Yes, your smartphone could potentially operate like a human brain with the help of a new processing chip that is in development at Movidius. Normal processors take in information that is introduced in a series and then evaluate the data to give a response. With this processor, the information comes in and it operates on parallel with the different streams of data coming in all at once. The long and short of it: The chip allows the phone to process data at the same time, much like the way our brains operate, intaking a ton of information and analyzing it simultaneously.
2. See like a human - Need to authorize a transaction or translate a sign? This new technology could allow your smartphone to essentially "see" what's in front of it. With the ability to identify objects in real time, this could make the device not only convenient for things like translation, but it could also be an improved aid for people with disabilities. For example, if a blind person to were to integrate this technology into their routine, the phone could recognize objects and help the user navigate urban areas or have conversations with familiar people. The power behind this chip could enable people to experience the world around them in a whole new way.
3. Bring AI to life - The partnership with Movidius is creating a pathway that will allow Google to put offline artificial intelligence into the hands of everyday users. Yes, there are already translating services and our phones are capable of doing a lot of things, but with the help of the Internet and the cloud. Imagine a device that doesn't need to connect to either of those to carry out those kinds of functions. The artificial intelligence capabilities would be accessed directly on the device, letting the user experience less delay and operate without having to be connected to WiFi or to tap into the cloud. Bringing machine learning home with you everyday would create even more integration with the devices that we already use so much.
Putting AI into the hands of everyday people could really make you feel like you're living in the future. Projects that Google might pursue could be a sort of instant image recognition visual search engine, in which you would be able to snap a photo of something you see and immediately have information about it, like a dog, or a type of tree in a park. The possibilities seem endless when we start to brainstorm about carrying around a machine that could "learn" with human-like capabilities. As Movidius Chief Executive Remi El-Ouazzane said, "This collaboration is going to lead to a new generation of devices that Google will be launching," he said. “And they will launch in the not-too-distant future.” While we don't know how long it might be, Google certainly seems to be on the cutting edge of bringing AI technology straight to your smartphone.
