Self-driving cars are rapidly growing in popularity with automakers. Although this technology was once considered science fiction, this is the most promising advanced vehicle we are developing today.
After Tesla’s self-driving feature in their car models, giant companies such as Google, Uber, and ford are showing big interest in developing self-driving cars as well. According Cnet, the coalition's aim is to urge government action on self-driving vehicles, specifically to cut through the patchwork because of the autonomous driving laws that differ wildly from state to state.
"The best path for this innovation is to have one clear set of federal standards," ex-US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration official David Strickland said in a statement. "The coalition will work with policymakers to find the right solutions that will facilitate the deployment of self-driving vehicles."
Fans say self-driving cars are potentially the most efficient and safest way of transportation. These vehicles are operated by a machine, which has no room for error. So, if a child is crossing a street, your self-driving car will be able to detect the danger and make appropriate actions.
In addition, these self-driving cars can inevitably also improve how buses and trains work. When the time comes that all consumers fully trust the automobile, it will be safe to say that developers will be moving this technology to making self-driving busses and trains. Automakers believe that auto-driving vehicles will move so much more efficiently that buses and carpools will no longer feel like a strain.
Moreover, because of this new innovation, we will never get lost and thieves won’t be able to take your car under your nose due to its built-in GPS. You will be able to go to wherever you need to go even when you're sleeping comfortably at the passengers seat. And, you’ll also be able to detect where your vehicle is at all times, especially if you’re one of those people who always forget where they parked their cars.
Although it may sound like the self-driving car is heaven sent from above, there are still a couple of drawbacks. For example, because computer algorithms control it, it won’t be able to cope with crisis situation that may arise on the spot. We still have to take note that emotional involvement is still important when we’re on the road. The car won’t know how to give way to other vehicles and people crossing the street, even if the stop lights says go.
Another thing to consider is that once these self-driving cars grow in popularity, drivers of public transportation will lose their jobs. Our society will find no use for them, which will lead to increase of unemployment rate. It would be the coolest thing to not use your hands while driving, but who will give these laborers a helping hand? We hope automakers think about them as well when we move towards a fully automotive future.
