Released in October 2017, Apple’s iPhone X marks ten years since the first iPhone was released. Over the years, the iconic phone got better and better. iPhone X, however, doesn’t bring only important upgrades in terms of performance, but also a new, groundbreaking technology: the Face ID. Behind this advanced technology is Apple’s innovative A11 Bionic chipset. Here are the main highlights of the iPhone X.
Display
Apple iPhone X is the first one to feature an OLED display. The display measures 5.8-inch and has a resolution of 2436 x 1125 pixels, with an outstanding pixel density of 485 pixels per inch. The OLED display offers deep blacks, high brightness, and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1. Following a recent trend, Apple adopted the same aspect ratio that LG and Samsung used for their latest flagships: 19.5:9 ratio. This type of aspect ratio is great for watching videos or playing games.
Performance
Besides the display, another reason why the iPhone X is a great phone for gaming is its performance. Powered by the Apple A11 Bionic chipset, the first one to use a 10nm process size, the device is blazingly fast. It has two high-performance cores clocked at 2.53GHz (Moonson) and 4 energy-efficient scores with a clock speed of 1.42 GHz (Mistral). With 4300 million transistors and a 64-bit architecture, the device handles the most demanding tasks. iPhone X has 3GB of RAM and comes with 64GB or 256GB of internal storage.
Cameras
Apple iPhone X features a dual-lens main camera with a resolution of 12 megapixels. With a wide aperture of f/1.8 and optical image stabilization, it provides advanced noise reduction, enhanced zoom, and high-quality photos even in low light. The main camera supports 4K video recording and has a quad-LED flash with different color temperatures. It offers manual controls for ISO, white balance, exposure, as well as a variety of modes: timelapse, burst mode, panorama. When tested by DxOMark Image Labs, the camera achieved one of the highest scores: 97 out of 100, just one point less than the current leader, Google Pixel 2. You can check out the full comparison of these two flagships here.
The front TrueDepth camera has 7 megapixels and a wide aperture of f/2.2. Besides being great for selfies, it makes possible the complex facial mapping process, together with the dot projector, flood illuminator, and the infrared camera. This complex setting is the base of Apple’s groundbreaking Face ID, one of the most secure authentication methods. Using more than 30,000 invisible dots, the dot projector creates a unique map of your facial features by projecting the dots onto your face. The infrared camera detects the dot pattern and the flood illuminator comes into play in low light conditions. This way, your unique facial features are recognized even in the dark. While image-based facial recognition is available for certain Android devices, like the OnePlus 5T or Samsung Galaxy S8, the Face ID uses a different technology and is more accurate.
Battery
Apple never used large batteries for its devices and the iPhone X is no different. It has a 2716 mAh battery, but despite the relatively small capacity, the device is power-efficient and can run for 21 hours on one charge while using 3G. The all-new glass design makes wireless charging possible.

For an almost 5 year old smartphone, the iPhone X is still a pretty decent phone. The battery I hear isn’t the greatest, I can’t really say because mine is at 84% health. It has the amazing build quality and great screen quality that Apple is known for. The camera can be glitchy and when you take a picture, you still have to hold it a few more seconds or else it will take a picture of the floor. It has been starting to slow down though, but a new battery might make it a bit faster. It does lag in games and gets very hot though. It’s not a deal breaker, but something you live with, and if the game allows you to turn down the settings, than you’re in luck. Overall it’s been a pretty good phone for the past 15 months.
