Cyber Monday is probably the only Monday that is not utterly disliked by people. A day dedicated to online shopping, it saved the reputation of all other Mondays, proverbially met with aversion. What is Cyber Monday and when does it take place? It’s a day of deals and sales that takes place annually on the first Monday after Thanksgiving. It’s Black Friday’s younger sibling, and it came into being in 2005 to stimulate online sales, hence the “cyber” in its name. Black Friday reached gargantuan proportions in the past decades. Still, it didn’t seem like it was enough for shoppers. Retailers responded by creating Cyber Monday, the online version of Black Friday.

Black Friday vs Cyber Monday

Is Cyber Monday simply the online counterpart of Black Friday? Yes, but it’s much more than that. In the early 2000s, people navigating the “cyberspace” (a.k.a. Internet) were just discovering the advantages of online shopping. In 1994, Netscape developed the SSL v2 encryption standard for secure data transfers, and the first secure retail transactions were made. Amazon launched a year later, and PayPal revolutionized the online payment system when it debuted in 1998. Social media channels emerged shortly after, proving to be a prolific channel for word-of-mouth marketing. What better way to make people trust online shopping than a special event? In 2005, the National Retail Federation announced the first edition of Cyber Monday.

How does it compare to Black Friday in terms of sales? Even though Black Friday remains the most important shopping day, with sales surpassing $700 billion in the United States, Cyber Monday attracts over 70 million shoppers on average, and generates more than $120 billion in sales per year, according to the National Retail Federation.

How to find the best Cyber Monday deals

This year, Cyber Monday takes place on December 2nd. The best part is that it extends beyond the day itself. Just as Black Friday sales spread way beyond the 24 hours, Cyber Monday became the start of what is now known as Cyber Week. That’s right: seven days of discounts and sales in all major online shops. It also an opportunity for smaller brands that operate exclusively online to take the spotlight.

How can you keep track of all the deals and make sure you take advantage of this shopping event? We got you covered: we’re going to monitor the best deals available and provide all the information you need to make an informed buying decision. In addition to our selection of top deals, we also have a few useful tips and tricks for shopping online.

1. Make a shopping list (preferably online)

Many online shops offer the possibility to add items to a wishlist. You can add anything you want on your list. In some cases, you can even share it with friends or family, a useful feature if you shop for gifts together with other people. You can also get price alerts and make sure you don’t miss a good deal by setting notifications for products that are about to be sold out.

2. Plan your spendings

With so many attractive deals and discounts, it’s very easy to overspend. You might not notice it, especially if you tend to buy a lot of accessories, but the total amount spent at the end of the holiday season might be shocking. It’s always good to think about your necessities and differentiate between what you need and what you want. It’s ok to take advantage of a great deal for a product that sparks your interest. However, you should not allow yourself to make a lot of impulse purchases and end up not having money left for buying the products you need. Our advice: set priorities and make a budget. Decide on a spending limit and try to stick to it.

2. Compare products

The key to setting up a budget is to figure out what you are looking for in a product. For which features are you willing to spend more? Is design a critical aspect for you? Or are you focusing more on a product’s functionality than its design?

For consumer electronics, Versus can be very helpful. For each product, we provide a cost-effectiveness score. The cost-effectiveness score indicates the value you get for your money when purchasing the product. We calculate the score by dividing the average price of a product by the number of Versus points, the latter being an indicator of the performance.

3. Check return policies

Online shopping can be tricky. It’s one thing to touch a product, see how it feels, and another thing to read data sheets and product reviews. Maybe a phablet looks good and has impressive specs, but once you get to hold it in your hand, you realize it’s way too large for you. There will be times when you are not going to be fully satisfied with your purchase. As long as you check the return policies and save the receipts, you can return the product and get a refund.
