Ok so Apple aren’t exactly renowned for their excellent battery life, so we compiled a list of things you can do to make your precious apple juice last that little bit longer.
1. Reduce screen brightness.
The brighter it is, the more battery you use. So either swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up your control centre, or go to Settings > Wallpaper > Brightness.
2. Turn off GPS.
This is one of the key power suckers, and unless you’re using maps or another app that uses your location, its kind of unnecessary. To turn it off go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services, and while you’re there you may as well stop the creepy Frequent Locations feature, too, which monitors places you visit regularly. From Location Services, go to System Services, then switch off the Frequent Locations option.
3. Turn off vibrations.
Not only are they incredibly annoying but they also drink up your juice like they’re stuck in a desert. Settings > Sounds and then disable vibrations on both Ring and Silent.
4. Disable push mail.
Do you really need those emails sent to you in real-time? Or could you handle receiving them in bouts of 15 minute intervals? Maybe even 30? Then go Settings > Mail, Contacts & Calendars > Fetch New Data, and then turn off Push. You can even set different settings for different accounts, such changing your work email to Manual, which means you only receive new emails when you open the mail app, rather than being constantly bombarded.
5. Disable Siri’s raise to speak option.
Arguably one of the most pointless iPhone features to date (is pressing the home button really that much effort?), so conserve your battery for the more important phone features by going to Settings > General > Siri, and then swipe off Raise to Speak. Trust me, you won’t even notice a difference.
6. Shorten auto-lock time.
This is the proper name for when your phone screen goes black when you finally put it on the table for a moment to eat your dinner. Go to Settings > General > Autolock, and for maximum battery efficiency set yours to 1 minute (don’t worry, it doesn’t turn the whole phone off, just the display).
7. Turn off automatic app updates and downloads.
Updating and downloading uses up A LOT of battery (and data) so make sure yours is turned off (Settings > iTunes and App Store). Check for updates before you get in the bath or go to sleep so that the slow, battery draining downloads don’t get in the way of all your important WhatsApp conversations on the train.
8. Switch off wifi, bluetooth and Airdrop if you aren’t using them.
Although smartphone essentials, these features are probably not much use to you when you’re trying to conserve your battery at a festival, on the bus or well, when you’re anywhere apart from home. So either pull up the Control Centre by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, or go the long way round by hitting on Settings.
9. Close dormant apps.
When you click off an app it doesn’t completely shut it down, instead it sits in the background of your smartphone eating away at all your battery (evil). So make sure to frequently press the Home button twice and swipe up on the apps you aren’t using to properly close them.
10. Update your software frequently and refrain from using dynamic wallpapers.
Last but not least a generally good upkeep of your phone will keep it working as fast as possible. For example frequently installing updates will potentially increase the battery that certain apps use, as will cleaning out your storage (which slows down processes), and abstaining from using phone screens that require lots of battery to move about.
