4 Companies Which Need To Lift Their Game After The Apple Keynote

Apple’s keynote events often cause major shake ups within the tech industry, especially so when they open up new product categories. Tuesday’s iPhone 6 and Apple Watch reveal was no exception, and while the quality of the products can be debated, it cannot be denied that Apple has continued to be a leader in tech innovation. Check out our list of 4 companies that will seriously need to lift their game if they want to compete against this new, reinvigorated Apple.

1. Google

As the developer of the current most popular smartwatch operating system (Android Wear), Google will need to learn from Apple’s new watch UI in order to maintain its competitiveness. The main advantage which Google has in this account, is that Android Wear is already on the market, and has been in the hands of developers for several months, while the Apple Watch will not be available till next year. Google could easily use this time to create new features ‘inspired’ by Apple’s UI.

2. Microsoft

Microsoft since its recent leadership reshuffle, has refocused as a cloud-oriented software company. While Apple isn’t quite following this same enterprise strategy, it too is massively expanding the scope of its iCloud (security questions aside), by turning it into not just a store of documents, but also of banking information through the Apple Pay system. Microsoft will have to decide whether it should follow a similar path with its One Drive, or add other competing features.

3. Samsung

Perhaps the biggest target of the Apple keynote on Tuesday, was Samsung. The new iPhone 6 Plus will be positioned to directly compete with Samsung’s highly successful Galaxy Note range, while the Apple Watch will compete with Samsung’s Gear devices. Even prior to the Apple event, Samsung had lifted its game, in order to produce new productivity features, and new wearable categories in order to compete with Apple by moving faster. Time will tell if this strategy will be enough to retain market share against the Cult of Apple.

4. LG

While other companies such as Samsung and Motorola have at least put out inspiring wearables, LG’s offerings have been uninspiring. It’s rectangular G Watch has much of the same design as the Apple Watch, however with much less class, while its round G Watch R is far too bulky and masculine for many customers. For it to seriously compete with Apple in wearables, the company will need to feature new and updated designs.
