In everyday conversation the brand name 'iPhone' is often used as a shorthand for 'smartphone', much in the same way 'Hoover' was used in lieu of 'vacuum cleaner'.
However if the astonishing figures from a new report published by Strategy Analytics are to be believed, we might all soon be saying 'Android', not 'iPhone' by sheer force of numbers.

Google's Android accounted for 85% of the smartphone market shipped in the second quarter this year. Apple, Windows Phone and Blackberry all lost out.
Apple's share now stands at 12% (compared to 13% this time last year). One of the reasons Apple is losing out is becasue of its refusal to cater to the lower end of the market. Android on the other hand, has intergrated better with various platforms, and its "low-cost services and user-friendly software remain wildly attractive to hardware makers, operators and consumers worldwide," according to Strategy Analytics’ Woody Oh.
