Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder, has spoken out against smartwatches and other wearable technology, telling the technology site Cnet that they are simply a “hard sell”, and little more than jumped-up Bluetooth headsets.
Wozniak’s sentiments are all the more poignant in the run up to Apple’s highly-anticipated media conference at the Flint Centre in Cupertino on September 9th. Although it has not been officially announced, pundits believe Apple are planning to use the event to launch their latest iPhone model, as well as introducing their first wearable smartwatch product. Apple’s invitation only says vaguely, “wish we could say more”.
“They are go-betweens for your smartphone but are an extra piece and need special advantages that the smartphone doesn’t have, in my opinion.”
If Apple release a smartwatch, they will join Samsung and LG, who have released new devices this week.
“I feel that wearables are a hard sell,” Wozniak told Cnet. “They are go-betweens for your smartphone but are an extra piece and need special advantages that the smartphone doesn’t have, in my opinion.”
“If they are just a Bluetooth go-between then it could wind up in the category of Bluetooth headsets: fun to wear and show off for a day,” said Wozniak.
Wozniak did have some positive things to say however. He said that if Apple were to go down that line of product, they would undoubtedly produce something worthwhile.
“Apple works very hard to produce exceptionally great products and doesn’t quickly release things like a wearable. So if one is introduced I expect it to have a chance to set the direction and make the product category finally viable,” Wozniak said.
He also added that if there is a smartwatch at all, he wants a larger screen "that can do more of what my iPhone does." "The small 1.5-inch by 1.5-inch screens don't hack it for me."
Whether or not Apple releases a smartwatch, the event is hoisted to be the biggest launch in Apple’s history. Watch this space.
