"Maybe an app, maybe something else..."
Apple CEO Tim Cook recounts an incident where the Apple Watch was able to save a life during his exclusive interview earlier today with The Telegraph in New York. Cook highlights the health benefits from the watch as it lets people closely monitor their heart rates and activity levels.
However, he made it clear that though they may have plans in delving into the health devices department, it definitely won't be the Apple Watch. “We don’t want to put the watch through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) process. I wouldn’t mind putting something adjacent to the watch through it, but not the watch, because it would hold us back from innovating too much, the cycles are too long. But you can begin to envision other things that might be adjacent to it -- maybe an app, maybe something else.” Cook tells The Telegraph.
"But not the watch, because it would hold us back from innovating too much."
FDA testing is required for products that will diagnose or treat diseases which can be another hint that the company is looking beyond calculating heart rates and activities. With the Apple Watch not running the medical track anymore, people are intrigued on what Apple is cooking for their aspirations of producing a device for the more serious medical use.
Sure, Apple can go and partake on the wellness devices market share which doesn't require FDA approval, but then again they are known for their innovative offerings and that will be a mediocre move. If they wanted to stay at the forefront of one-of-a-kind devices even in the medical field, they will need to release an amazing offering that is technology advanced but FDA approved no matter how grueling that process might be.
