These past Sunday, at the Auto Shanghai 2015, we finally saw the future of cars, and it’s Tron, the video game.
Chevrolet revealed their newest concept car, the FNR, which is fully electric and autonomous. The FNR channels Tron with its hubless, magnetic wheel system and dual-dragonfly doors. Covered inside and outside in slate gray and blue LED accent lights, the wraparound dashboard is nothing like you’ve ever seen before. It also sports crystal laser headlights and taillights and a wireless auto-charge system. Also on deck are mesh seats, the front of which swirl around 180 degrees to face the back seats. Perhaps the coolest concept though, is a roof-mounted radar system that shows your real-time navigation route, so even if you aren’t driving, you can control your route.
“What we did with this car is we asked the engineering team to visualize what a car will look like in 2020,” said Mike Albano, communications director for Chevrolet.
A mid-sized sedan, this is one of the first electric vehicles to bring size and comfort into the equation. “A lot of electric vehicles are typically smaller vehicles, to keep latent mass down. This was an exercise in what could you do with a mid-sized sedan,” said Albano.
Already Chevy has made a complete transformation to all-electric vehicles, and has sold more than 60,000 Chevy Volts.
“For everyone around the word, time is a key commodity and autonomy would deliver that. If you can take the hands off the steering wheel, you can do other things”, he said. But for those that also want to be able to drive their autonomous vehicle though, Chevy has planned for you as well. Simply indicate via voice or gesture, and the steering functions will return to you.
Unfortunately for us, though, the autonomy is not fully functional yet, which means it will be a while before the FNR hits the streets.
Albano assuredly reminds us that Chevy already has plenty of semi-autonomous vehicles that are on the test tracks now.
