Facebook has now attempted to operate a gender neutral website. Giving the user endless possibilities when it comes to gender identity, the social network made a recent update this Thursday that allows users to customize their profiles in the gender section which allows them to type anything they want.

Although the preset list of “Male” and “Female” still exists, now the user can also choose “custom”, which they are then allowed to type in their own preferred identity into the field. Additionally, you can select your own pronoun.

In a post on their diversity page, Facebook said, “As before, you can add up to ten gender terms and also have the ability to control the audience with whom you would like to share your custom gender”.

“We recognize that some people face challenges sharing their true gender identity with others, and this setting gives people the ability to express themselves in an authentic way”.

The company has already received widespread applause for this, but at the same time, they are receiving a huge backlash from the “real name policy”, which many people argue, puts the same people that benefit from this new customizable gender policy at risk.

The post has received numerous likes, but it has also become a place to comment on the questionable motives of the name policy.
