With smart phone and smart watch car integration in full swing and even self-driving cars in the mix, technology just might take over our everyday commute in more ways than one.

There are plans for full-blown integration of special heads-up displays on vehicle windshields to assist in driving and navigation. Phone apps like Hudway and Garmin have been trying to make windshield HUDs a thing now with no special requirements necessary.

But with augmented and virtual reality gaining speed it is a logical direction car manufacturers might go to since bigwigs like BMW have already dabbled in it in the past. With smart phone and smart watch car integration in full swing and even self-driving cars in the mix, technology just might take over our everyday commute in more ways than one.

A study by the University of Toronto however has stated the addition of visual information on the windshield might needlessly distract and divide the driver’s attention from what’s actually in front of him. Department of Psychology professor Ian Spence states that “not only will drivers have to concentrate on what’s happening on the road around them as they’ve always done, they’ll also have to attend to whatever warning pops up on the windshield in front of them.”

In the end it’s still up to the driver to still be responsible and keep his eyes on the road. I’m all for the windshield HUDs since it will make me feel like I’m playing a video game.
