It’s been said that “in every mistake there is potential for growth”. This could not be a truer sentiment for Ryan Grepper, who is celebrating outrageous success with his Kickstarter campaign.
The Coolest Cooler, Grepper's Kickstarter campaign for a mult-functional party cooler has raised more than $10,340,520 million as I write Wednesday on the last day of the official campaign. He was asking for fifty grand.
In an interview with Mashable Grepper, from Oregon, talks about how this recent success is completely born out of failure. His goal in this Kickstarter campaign was to right all the wrongs of the failure of an earlier campaign with the same product.
"as most people who are first launching a project on Kickstarter do, you do some research, you put the product out there, and you hope for and secretly expect that because this idea is great, magically it will get funded."
Last winter Grepper launched the Coolest Cooler on Kickstarter and fell $20,000 short of his $125,000 goal. But this wasn’t going to keep Grepper down. He took the courage to analyse what may have gone wrong with the campaign, and used the information to restrategise.
His first realisation was that the funding goal was a bit too high, at $125,000. The next realisation was that the prototype of his product was not far along enough in the design process to appeal to people. Thirdly, and one of his biggest mistakes, was that he launched his cooler project in winter-time, when coolers are the farthest thing from everybody’s mind.
He told Mashable: "as most people who are first launching a project on Kickstarter do, you do some research, you put the product out there, and you hope for and secretly expect that because this idea is great, magically it will get funded."
Grepper said that the whole process "was very disappointing."
However Grepper went back to the drawing board, and seven months later launched his second (and current) campaign on Kickstarter. By then he had a fully-developed, attractive prototype. It was a piping hot July, when everyone needed a cooler
When all the right components were set in place, support for the cooler poured in. Within three days the cooler had hit it’s $50,000 target. Another day later again, the cooler campaign hit the $1 million mark.
Now the “Coolest Cooler” at over $10M and tomorrow Grepper will collect 20,000% of his original funding goal. This is the highest percentage gain of any other Kickstarter campaign in its history. If at first you don’t succeed; try, try again.
