Ever heard of Gionee? Nope, don’t worry, nor had we. But it seems that the Chinese smartphone producer is determined to get heard, and they’re going the wrong way about it.
This week, the chinese equivalent to FCC ‘Tenaa’ certified the production of the company’s newest release: A 5mm thick smartphone. When the 5.5mm width of their wafer-thin Elife S5.S apparently failed to make enough of an impression, Gionee failed to get the hint, and instead will soon be releasing an even skinnier version of the device. The GN9005 (presumably not its final title), will reportedly be 5mm (0.2inches) thick - half a centimenter less than its older brother - and also potentially the tiniest smartphone out there. But being a contender for the slimmest phone in the world is pretty much all its got going for it right now. The rest of its specs are seriously lacking in comparison to its competitors, with a 4.8 inch 720p AMOLED screen, sluggish quad-core 1.2GHz processor and 2,050mAh battery. Not bad considering its thin size, but not-bad doesn’t ever get you very far. 1GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean secure the GN9005’s place in technology as over almost as soon as it’s begun.
With battery life being a major sufferer when it comes to phone size, often getting overlooked in favour of aesthetics, we beg the question ‘why’? If we wanted to hold a sheet of glass that we could never turn on then, well, we would.
