It’s basically a compromise if you think about it. It has the portability of older phones and some of the futuristic luxuries of the smartphones.
LG is banking on the throwback trope to bring back a novelty that was popular, what felt like, a decade ago. The Korean bigwigs are trying to make flip phones a thing again. I remember my first ever flip phone back in… oh crap I can’t remember. I just know that when I did have it I was practically the coolest kid on the block. Watch me and my phone go snap. But its 2015 now and touchscreens dominate the landscape.
In a daring move, LG has announced the first flip phone in ages. Time will tell if LG’s gamble will pay off. The LG Gentle (please be gentle with ourideas –LG) is the first ever flip phone to be powered by the Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Smartphones have overpowered the flip phones in many ways. The convenient advantage of touchscreen user-friendliness and the superior processing power are the main draws to the touchscreen phones.
They also come in all sizes from the smaller 5 inch variants to the larger phablets. So what could possibly draw you back to the flip phones? One slight problem with touchscreen phones are their large sizes and they generally aren’t that convenient to place in your pocket whilst in an everyday commute. So flip phones want to bring back the convenience of extremely light and small phones that easily fit in your pocket.
LG’s idea isn’t all that bad as it comes with its own merits. It’s basically a compromise if you think about it. It has the portability of older phones and some of the futuristic luxuries of the smartphones.
It’s got 4G LTE for one thing. The Gentle also comes with a minimalist 3.2 inch screen, 1.1 GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 3MP camera, and 4GB internal memory. It screams budget phone that’s for sure.
It’s extremely affordable however as it currently only sells for around $170. There is major doubt if they will expand outside of Asia though as the European and American continents have much better options.
