Modern warfare looks drastically different from as recent as five years ago. Nowadays, there are confirmed and unconfirmed reports of incredibly high tech military weapons being developed for the US armed forces. Let us take a look at 5 of the most noteworthy military hardware today.
1. HEL MD Photon Cannon
This laser system stands for High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator. It fires a 10-kilowatt laser from the vehicle and is meant to swat out incoming missiles and mortars. Yup, it can do that. Its engineers are a team made up of Army personnel and Boeing’s defense and security division.
An even bigger version if being made that will fire 50-60-kilowatt lasers that will easily knock out big missiles and UAVs. Perhaps the most bizarre (read: cool) feature is that an Xbox controller can be used to operate the HEL MD.
2. Laser Weapon System (LaWS)
Already deployed on a Navy ship, the USS Ponce, the Laser Weapon System or LaWS is an effective weapon against UAVs in the high seas. The $40 million prototype releases a 30-kilowatt photon beam and is powered by six solid-state welding lasers. These lasers combine into one (think Death Star) powertrain and can also confuse navigational systems aboard enemy ships. Domination of the seas comes pretty cheap for the LaWS at just a dollar per laser shot.
3. BAE EM Rail Gun
Rail guns, unlike traditional guns which use an explosion to propel a bullet, are powered by electricity. The rail gun works with a current being coursed through a pair of rails. A slider is powered up to fire the projectile using electromagnetic energy.
The BAE’s rail gun has many logistical problems that limit its use but it has been proven to fire at a velocity of Mach 7.5 with a range of 124 miles. Since this project is funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the BAE rail gun may find itself on the deck of the future Zumwalt-class destroyers.
Conspiracy theorists have had their plates full ever since the HAARP came into the picture. Ostensibly, the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program is, in a few words, a weaponized weather controlling platform. Many aspects of HAARP are top secret but everything from communications disruption to earthquakes and tsunamis have been blamed on HAARP. It works by using electromagnetic frequencies that “temporarily excite a limited area of the ionosphere.”
5. Rods of God
Also known as Project Thor, also known as kinetic bombardment, also known as “Rods of God.” These weapons officially do not exist anywhere on the planet. If real, however, these 20-40 foot rods are housed in an orbital platform and are nothing more than inert metal pieces.
Their power comes from the earth’s gravitational pull. Once deployed, the “Rods of God” accelerate down to the earth’s surface at mind-bending speeds and, upon impact, can cause an explosion akin to an 11.5 ton TNT blast. The nature of this weapon makes it incredibly difficult to defend against. If conspiracy theorists are correct, the Tianjin twin blasts were its first active use against a sovereign nation.
