Recently Sony announced that PlayStation Music Unlimited will come to a close, and it followed it up with much better news: that Spotify will arrive on the PS3 and the PS4.
Apparently over the past six months, Sony and Spotify have been collaborating on the brand new console app that will be a main feature of the new PlayStation Music service.
It will be free to the free and paid users, but Spotify Premium subscribers will have an ad-free experience, and can also stream a higher quality of music at 320kbps.
The app has undoubtedly been designed for PlayStation. Arranged like tiles on a grind, there is seamless movement through artists, playlists and genres, which should feel natural to any PlayStation 4 user.
It is divided into three sections based on curated playlists, moods, and your music. Any song or artist is searchable, and once signed into your Spotify account, you can choose your favorite music and build a queue.
A major feature is Background Play, which allows you to create your own soundtrack during your video games by simply having Spotify running the background.
Although there is still no custom playlists, there is a massive choice of Spotify playlists that users can select from. Spotify Radio is also noticeably absent, but PR has subtly hinted that it is soon to come.
A major feature is Background Play, which allows you to create your own soundtrack during your video games by simply having Spotify running the background. The game’s sound effects will still be audible, but you can choose what music you’re listening to.
Users can simply access Spotify without even going to the dashboard, they simply need to the hold down the home button, which will open a music menu that has basic playback and volume controls. It is also Bluetooth-enabled, which means you can control the app through your phone so long as you’re connected to the Spotify app, Spotify Connect.
Although Spotify’s Head of Global Product Marketing Tim Grimsditch said they weren’t prepared to discuss the longevity of the relationship between PlayStation and Spotify, for PS3 and PS4 users, it starts today.
