The hype revolving around the Falcon Heavy is its touted reusable technology.

SpaceX is preparing for its most ambitious project yet: the Falcon Heavy Rocket. It is the most powerful operational rocket today and can deliver a Dragon spacecraft and other large payloads into orbit. It also restores the capability of mankind to go to the moon and Mars.

The Falcon Heavy is based on three Falcon 9 rockets. The Falcon 9 made headlines just last June 2015 after faulty rocket struts caused the CRS-7 launch to explode en route to the International Space Station. The display obliterated millions of dollars’ worth of NASA hardware. It was the first launch failure of SpaceX in a respectable 7 year span.

It is the most powerful operational rocket today and can deliver a Dragon spacecraft and other large payloads into orbit. 

Despite these setbacks, the Falcon Heavy is being prepared for a spring 2016 launch. It will serve as a demonstration ahead of a planned US Air Force launch sometime September next year. The contract involves 37 new satellites into orbit.

The hype revolving around the Falcon Heavy is its touted reusable technology. If successful, its initial stage boosters will land safely in Earth. Eventually, even the second stage booster is hoped to be installed with the reusable rocket launching system. This technology will dramatically cut the costs of space travel.

If these efforts prove successful, they will make SpaceX’s dream of reaching the moon, Mars, and beyond closer to reality. To date, SpaceX clients include the Department of Defense and other private entities which wish to launch satellites into orbit. The DoD contract alone is for 37 new satellites.

This high profile and high budget project hopes to end the string of failed launches that has beleaguered space projects. The Antares rocket program, run by Orbital Sciences Corporation, enjoyed a smooth four-launch run before the catastrophic Cygnus CRS Orb-3 explosion on October28, 2014. The failed M-27M spacecraft launch on April 28, 2015 of Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, rounds up the list of recent tragedies.
