Two years ago, if you had of asked anybody if there was a need for mobile phones with a greater resolution than Full HD they probably would have said no. This year things have changed somewhat, as flagship phones have now grown to often feature screen sizes in excess of 5 inches. At this size, some manufacturers have sought to justify the includes of Quad HD (QHD) screens to maintain high pixel density.
This being said, this is very much a borderline improvement, with all but the most attentive eye unable to see the difference. Knowing this, the last thing we expected was for a manufacturer to release a device with a screen within an even greater resolution!
Coming out of China, home of some of the most wacky and experimental phone designs we have seen so far, is the Meizu MX4 Pro. This device now holds the title for the smartphone with the highest display resolution. With a 2K+ 5.5-inch 2560 x 1536 pixel display, the phone has a massively sharp pixel density of 546 PPI.
Whether or not this increased density has be perceived or not remains to be seen, however this phone is far from being a one-trick-pony. It is also one of the most powerful devices on the market, running Samsung’s Exynos 5430 processor which features 8 separate cores backed by 3GB of RAM. Along with this, the MX4 Pro comes with a large 3350 mAh battery and a 20MP rear camera sensor.
Of course all this extra hardware needs to go somewhere, meaning that the build of the phone is slightly thicker (at just under a centimeter) than other devices by competitors. Additionally, there’s no denying this phone’s form factor is a copy of the iPhone. Everything from the colors to the bezels and even the metallic bands, closely mimic the new iPhone 6. Furthermore the phone features a biometric identification system that is almost identical in appearance and implementation to Apple’s Touch ID.
The Meizu MX4 Pro will go on sale in China on December 6 starting at $410 (CN¥2,499). There is no word yet on when (or if) it will be available in other markets too.
