Getting lost in any busy city is not an option for Uber which is why they asked for the help of TomTom and their advanced map-making technology. This marks a multi-year deal that will ensure Uber drivers can now experience seamless navigation experience, accurate arrival times and efficient journeys in more than 300 cities around the world.
“We look forward to working with TomTom, a leader in the mapping and navigation space,” said Head of Product Partnerships at Uber Matt Wyndowe in a press statement. “Their mapping and traffic data will help ensure we continue to provide a great experience for drivers everywhere.”
The ride-hailing app had been pretty persistent in landing the best mapping partner for months, even offering Nokia $3billion for its mapping business which was declined. But as they say, all things work out for the best. Now, Uber has TomTom, aside from also acquiring mapping technology and talent from Microsoft. Uber had already begun using Microsoft's fleet of Bing cars to have a Google Street View-like imagery on their maps.
“We are excited to provide Uber with our best-in-class location data.”
“We are excited to provide Uber with our best-in-class location data.” said Charles Cautley, Managing Director Maps & Licensing at TomTom in a press release. “TomTom is a truly independent map provider with the platform for the future. With this platform, TomTom is the trusted partner for innovative and future proof location technology for the global automotive and consumer technology industry.”
Uber's effort to improve their mapping data also stems from their dream of producing self-driving cars in the future. To make this dream a reality, the company had leased a 53,000 square foot facility in Pittsburgh which houses top robotic talent from Carnegie Mellon University to carry out research on autonomous vehicles.
