If you've ever had the distinct displeasure of working in Washington DC you'll know that it's one of the most hideously formal work arenas in the world. Full suits, long-sleeved shirts, knee length skirts, in grey and navy, and then more grey and navy.
It's at its worst in the summer when the city steams as hot as a swamp. It doesn't matter if it's 95 F outside, you wear the suit jacket. If you dare to wear open-toed shoes, people will look at you as if you have some unsightly foot disease.
"People are putting up with me walking around [the Eisenhower Executive Office Building] and the West Wing just wearing whatever."
A friend of mine who was interning on the Hill mistakenly wore a light coloured suit to work. She was swiftly reprimanded, and told she had to 'earn' the right to wear colour.
So you get the picture.
With this in mind, the news that the computer engineering team in the White House are allowed work in casual clothes is sort of hilarious. It seems that the White House are so hell-bent on recruiting the best innovators from famously down-dressed Silicon Valley to fix their antiquated web infrastructure, they'll do anything.
According to the Hill, who interviewed some of the engineers:
“People are putting up with me walking around [the Eisenhower Executive Office Building] and the West Wing just wearing whatever,” Mikey Dickerson said in a new White House video.
“I mean, not quite whatever — I’m not wearing a t-shirt,” he said. “I made some slight concessions. I’m wearing actual shirts with buttons and collars, but that’s about where we’re at right now."
