Late Thursday evening Microsoft sent their first round of invitations to a Windows 10 press event scheduled for January 21 at the company headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

Despite rumors that Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner told Japanese news service Nikkei on Wednesday that Windows 10 would launch “early next fall”, the company has not yet confirmed an actual release date. However, former Microsoft executives have cited a “late 2015” release date.

The keynote speakers will include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, executives Terry Myerson and Joe Belfiore, and Xbox chief Phil Spencer.

After the major disaster of Windows 8, the company decided to skip straight Windows 10 in order to convince users that it was “a whole new generation”. The Windows 10 announcement, which was written by Myerson and released in the Windows Blog late September, said that there is more than 1.5 billion people that operate a Windows device today, and therefore the new operating system will be a “threshold [and] now it’s time for a new Windows. Our new Windows must be built from the ground up for a mobile first, cloud first world”.

The brand new system will use a variety of devices, from phones to gaming consoles. Additionally, Microsoft will consolidate the various app stores and will merge them into one platform, the One Store.

It’s likely that the event in January will focus mostly on consumer strategy, perhaps specifically aimed at businesses.
