The Chinese company that has taken the mobile world by storm is also taking a leap into the camera business, or so it would seem.
Xiaomi has just debuted the brand new Yi Action Camera, which shoots videos in 1080 high definition resolution at 60 frames per second, and has a 16 megapixel camera with a wide-angle lens. In the true spirit of competition, Xiaomi has sought fit to allow the camera to be waterproof up to depths of 40m.
The device can be tethered to a smartphone and controlled remotely and even share any of the video or images in captures, and can be used to create time-lapse videos. Additionally, it offers 64GB of integrated memory and weighs a mere 72 grams, compared to the 111 grams of the GoPro Hero.
Despite the GoPro being marketed for extreme sports and adrenaline junkies, the Yi Action Camera is currently only available in China, and that seems unlikely to change. The market, therefore, caters to the domestic market alone. Therefore, the Yi accessories include a selfie stick, and a harness that can be attached to a helmet, bike, and even a cat.
The current retail price is 399CNY or about USD $60, where the entry level GoPro starts at $129.
