You Got A $50 Bill Put Your Hands Up

Alongside releasing their newest budget-friendly tablets the Fire HD 8 and the Fire HD 10, Amazon revealed the $50 Fire. Yes, that’s right. A tablet, for $50.

Today Amazon did a great thing, and nobody wrote about it.

Yes, that’s right. A tablet, for $50.

The Fire has a 7-inch screen, and under the hood, it houses a 1.3 quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage which will be expandable. It has a front-facing camera and a 2-megapixel rear camera.

The 1,024 x 600-pixel resolution will underwhelm you. I won’t lie to you kids, it has a pixelated screen.

But Amazon promises a 7-hour battery life.

Now available for pre-orders, it will start shipping out September 30. Sadly for the folks down under, Amazon doesn’t ship to Australia, but if you import it, it will cost around AU$70. For those in the UK, it will be a £50 tablet.

Less than half the price of the Fire HD 6, the Fire is by far the cheapest in Amazon’s tablet line up. In fact, it’s the most affordable tablet of any major manufacturer.

So even though the Fire HD 6 has a sharper screen, the newer model is bigger and it has a microSD card slot - which has been previously absent from all other Amazon tablets.

It’s obviously designed for those on a shoestring budget in mind, and for that, we can all give Amazon a round of applause and throw shade at Apple.

It will run on Amazon’s brand new operating system, the Android Lollipop-based Fire OS 5 Bellini. It has a new user interface that is much simpler to navigate and is made to consume your favorite movies, games, and books.

It’s not the prettiest thing to look out. In fact, it looks like something from 2011. It’s big and bulky, with a very girthy design. But it’s not uncomfortable in the slightest.

This is hardly the world’s best tablet, but for the price, I think it’s pretty impressive that they managed to put to cameras on it at all. But that’s not the point: it’s obviously designed for those on a shoestring budget in mind, and for that, we can all give Amazon a round of applause and throw shade at Apple.
