What is 5G?

5G cellphones

Released only recently in 2019, consumer cellphones that support 5G are still few and far between, as mobile networks and cellphone companies work to adjust devices according to the new technology. Following the T-Mobile and Sprint merger, the company announced that they plan to roll out broad mid-band 5G coverage across many cities throughout 2021.

Types of 5G

Low-band 5G provides quite a bit of coverage but not much speed, and when you get up to high-band 5G, it’s the opposite; there isn’t much coverage yet, but you’ll notice faster speeds. DSS refers to a network that fluctuates the connection between 4G and 5G.

Not every phone with 5G capabilities supports every type of 5G as it’s dependent on the mobile chipset powering the phone. And not every mobile network carrier supports every kind of 5G either. This is an important factor to consider when choosing a 5G phone and carrier. For example, the Moto Z4 supports only high-band 5G, which means that you might not be able to enjoy all of the features and functions of 5G if you’re in an area with little coverage.
