Whether wired or connected wirelessly, portable speakers allow you to set the soundtrack for a fun day at the pool, a lazy float down the river, or just about anywhere else you decide to go. Suddenly, watching movies at a friend’s house or listening to your favorite songs at the beach becomes a much more enticing idea with a speaker in hand.

Do you know what’s not enticing? Wondering whether or not that dip or drop in the pool just totally fried your speaker. Due to their portable nature, it’s likely that you’ll drop, ding, and splash just about any portable speaker. That’s okay. If you’re active, always on-the-go, and love to lay out by the water, just make sure you’ve got a waterproof speaker.

The difference between water-resistant and weather-sealed

Plenty of devices are weather-sealed nowadays. However, all that means is that thanks to additional seals, water splashes and dust are no longer life-threatening circumstances for your flashy new gadget. It doesn’t mean that it can withstand immersion unless it has additional protection such as IP67 or IP68 water resistance ratings (even then, liquid damage may not be covered by warranties). Weather-sealed devices are able to withstand a few drops of water and a splash here or there, but won’t withstand being fully submerged in water.

What about waterproof?

Again, there’s a slight difference between something that’s water-resistant and completely waterproof. When talking about water resistance, we’re talking about protection against humidity and water penetration. A water-resistant device can endure raindrops or water splashes, or even an occasional drop in the sink. In essence, they’re better protected compared to weather-sealed products, they are not waterproof.

How do you measure a speaker’s waterproof rating?

Currently, many consumer electronics are classified by IP ratings, with IP67 and IP68 being the most common at this point. For portable speakers, we look at its IP67 rating. An IP67 rating means, first, that the device is protected from harmful dust and secondly that it’s protected from immersion in water for up to 30 minutes in depths of no more than 1 meter.
